Why Variegated Plants are so special?

Back when I brought my very first variegated plant home, I have to admit, the obsession was not there. It was the hype, the curiosity, and the reaction a friend of mine - whose obsession had started long ago - had when we ran across this plant at the store. Soon after, I found myself in strange excitement getting up one morning, running to check out the new leaf. There it begins!

What is variegation? It is where various colors develop on the leaf and/or stem of a plant in many different forms (patches, stripe, spots). These colors can be white, yellow, different shades of green, pink, etc...

The Rarity

Variegations generally happen in 3 ways:

  • Naturally (genetic mutation): extremely rare.

  • Cultivation: experienced professional growers, require special skills and techniques.

  • Scientific method: chemical manipulation or gene modification technologies. But lets face it, not all of us are a genius scientist.

The Unpredictability

Similar to humans and their DNA. Each variegated plant carries a unique set of genetics. No two leaves are the same, no two plants are the same. Each new leaf is a new wonder.

The Delicacy

Variegated plants require extra care and attention to maintain color on their foliage. More commitment, more effort, that just makes the process an adventure and each new leaf that much more rewarding.
